Located at the foot of Ngu Hanh Son mountain in Hoa Hai ward, Ngu Hanh Son district, Da Nang city, Non Nuoc stone carving craft village is considered the oldest and most famous craft village in Da Nang.
Over nearly four centuries of existence, Non Nuoc stone art products with strong artistic value have affirmed their position in the market, going beyond national borders, reaching out to the world, becoming a source of pride and bringing significant revenue to Non Nuoc craft village.
Long-standing traditional craft village
Non Nuoc stone carving village was formed from the mid-17th century to the early 18th century. The founder of the craft was a native of Thanh Hoa, named Huynh Ba Quat, who brought the stone carving craft from Thanh Hoa to Da Nang. In the village today, there is still a temple dedicated to “Thach Nghe To Su”; the 6th day of the first lunar month every year is the death anniversary of the founder of Non Nuoc stone carving village.
Initially, in this area, there were not many people who knew how to make stone; the products were mainly used for the daily life of the local people, such as rice mortars, grain mills or stone tombstones. Around the beginning of the 19th century, when the Nguyen Dynasty built many palaces and mausoleums, the stone craft here had the conditions to develop, the reputation of the craft village also increased, some skilled craftsmen were awarded the rank of Ninth Grade by the court, many craftsmen from the village were invited to work everywhere.
Previously, raw stone was often quarried locally – Ngu Hanh Son mountain, mainly marble, with many colors and beautiful patterns such as red, black, white, smooth texture, soft, easy to carve. However, due to the increasingly depleted local raw material source, since 1990, the People's Committee of Quang Nam - Da Nang province decided not to allow quarrying in Ngu Hanh Son anymore, the craftsmen had to import stone from other places.
When the raw materials are available, the stone sculptor will create the product in its rough form. This is the stage of creating the blank. The process of creating the blank is carried out systematically and includes many steps such as: finding a flat surface to create the base, determining the standard point for creating the shape, sketching on paper, then drawing on the stone surface or printing directly on the stone. For difficult products with high artistic value, the craftsman must sketch and make the blank with clay first, and only when the requirements are met will they officially make the product. According to the sketch, the craftsman proceeds to carve the blank and create the shape of the product.
When the blank is completed, the craftsman will make details to complete the product, such as: carving lines, decorating patterns, grinding, polishing the product. For the craftsman, at this stage, the most important thing is carving lines and decorating. The detailed implementation stage shows the stone carving technique and the golden hands of the craftsman. In addition to the general process for all products, each type of product has specific technical requirements.
To get a beautiful color for the product, sometimes the craftsman has to dye the stone with dyes combined with green tea leaves, brown shoe polish, indigo, etc. The secret to getting a beautiful color depends on mixing the colors, creating the temperature, and using the light and dark colors. The finished product needs to go through many stages, thanks to the talented and experienced hands of the craftsman.
Located in the land of Ngu Hanh Son, deeply influenced by Champa culture from My Son Sanctuary, the stone carving village is a harmonious blend of two cultures: Ancient Vietnamese and Champa. This has created a rich flow of both creativity and artistic images to bring works full of vitality over time. Each work is not only carved and polished by skillful hands and sharp eyes, but in it, the artisan also sends his feelings and breathes life into his "child".
